Is the Christian life supposed to be boring?
Bible passages:
James 1:17, Galatians 6:8, Galatians 5:16-26, Ecclesiastes 2:10-11, Romans 14:17, Psalm 34:8, Romans 8:28, John 10:10.
Discussion:
Boring is a relative word, dictionary describes boring as “something or someone that is tedious, dull, and lacking in interest”.
If we try to examine what the world grouped as exciting, it includes:
- drunkenness
- substance misuse / “being high”
- adultery / fornication
- stealing / forgery / false witness
- wild parties / smoking
- breaking the law
Other examples are in Galatians 5:19-21.
There is a misconception that when you give up sin and sinful nature; you gave up fun. Such a misconception comes from a sinful nature that lacks the divine understanding - of knowing that all the commandments of God are for our benefits. For example Exodus 20:12 says “honour your father and your mother” … comes with a promise of long life… “so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you”
Lack of divine understanding makes people to think that there are enjoyment in the world but they do not realize that there are consequence of:
- hang over
- health issue shorter or longer term
- unhappiness and so on
…
It is only when one live in Christ that
- full excitement
- absolute freedom
- true joy
- everlasting peace
- contentment
could be experienced.
In conclusion
Solomon whom was classified as the most richest king in history; said in Ecclesiastes 2:10-11 that all is vanity.
“ I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;
I refused my heart no pleasure.
My heart took delight in all my labor,
and this was the reward for all my toil.
Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;
nothing was gained under the sun.”
In addition, David wrote in Psalm 34:8
that “taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge”.
