How does God’s sovereignty (supremacy) work with free will?
Question
On one side we know that God is all knowing and He has power over everything no needing to ask for our permission to do what He needs to do. And on the other hand, we have free will in which we are not predetermined. The question is, how does God’s sovereignty (supremacy) work with free will?
Bible passages:
John 12:40, Romans 8:26, Matthew 6:10, Jeremiah 29:11, Matt 6:8, Ephesians 5:18, John 2 and 3.
Discussion:
God can force us to do what He wants us to do even with the free will. The story of Jonah and Nineveh - Jonah 3. Christian should always pray and have the mindset of doing the will of God.
We should also be aware that God does not have limitation in what He can do. Human nature can be predictable, God sees our heart, He knows the decision ahead based on our character.
God knows who we are before giving us the free will. John 12:40 Jesus was addressing the Pharisees that their eyes were blind. God can predict and know our thoughts. 1Sam 16 - God sent Samuel to house of Jesse to anoint one of Jesse’s son.
1 Sam 16:6-7:
*When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”*
John 14:26, Luke 12:12 - Holy Spirit teaches us how to pray and the will of Father.
In conclusion:
Jesus Christ has to pray for the will of God to happen when in the garden of Gethsemane Matthew 26:39.
*And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” *
The Lord’s Prayer
Matthew 6:9-13
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
*thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.*
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
Thy will be done should be a constant prayer point for every Christians as it helps us to trade our will to God’s will.
Praise God🙏🏾
