(2Corinthians 2:11) Is it right for Church to exercise any discipline on members, because the word of God says we must not judge each other. So if “Yes” why? And if “No” why?
Bible passages:
Hebrews 12:6, 1Corinthians 5:1-5, Proverbs 3:11-12, 1Corinthians 5:12-13, Matthews 7:2, Proverbs 27:6, Proverbs 13:24.
Discussion:
The author of the book of Hebrews encouraged Christians in Hebrews 12:5-6 that God is our Father and we (His children) should not be angry when He corrects us.
Verse 6 says the Lord corrects those He loves and He punishes everyone He accepts as His children.
The book of Proverbs 3:11-12 also warned the Israelites not to reject the Lord’s discipline and should not be angry when He corrects, because the Lord corrects those He loves.
Having the principles of God in mind and Jesus Christ’s explanation of family in Matthew 12:46-50.
When Jesus was told, that His mother and brothers were looking for Him…. verse 49 pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
Jesus Christ made it clear to us that our brethren in the house of God are our family. The scripture also encouraged us to be our brother’s keeper.
The Church of God that disciplines is not judging but performing biblical duty of God.
1Corinthians 5:12-13, Apostle Paul clarified that it is not for Church or believers to judge those who are not part of the Church as God will judge them. But believers must judge the people who are part of the Church. He went further to quote “You must get rid of the evil person among you”.
In conclusion, there was an incident in the bible where a man has his father’s wife. The bible says in 1Corinthians 5:1-5 that the man was proud of the sexual sin. Apostle Paul’s stated that ….. he has judged the man and such a man should be handed over to satan so that his sinful self will be destroyed and his spirit will be saved on the day of the Lord.
Church discipline is to save believers from destruction.
It is also important that the Church that will judge others must be without sin otherwise the correction will be hypocritical According to Matthew 7:5.
In addition, every correction must be done with love to embrace the believer back to Church if he/she repent.
Praise God🙏🏽
