Why is “the devil made me do it” not a valid excuse?
Preamble:
We often experience people after committing sin or doing something extremely evil claiming that is not their fault but “the devil made them do it”.
Bible passages:
Genesis 3:13, Genesis 3:12, Genesis 6:5, John 13:2, 27, John 12:5-6, John 13:27, Matthew 9:22, 1Peter 5:8, James 1:14-15, 1Corinthians 10:13, 1John 4:4, Ephisians 5:18, James 4:7, Luke 18:1-5, Phil 1:6, Ephisians 6:10, Exodus 20:20, 2Timothy 2:22, James 1:19, Psalm 119:11, Ephisians 4:20, Joel 3:10, 2Timothy 2:25-26.
Discussion:
God came on earth to show us how to cope with sin. He said we should be holy as our father in heaven is holy. God gave us free will to choose from good or bad; but sin makes us to disobey God. Sin also brings separation between God and man or woman.
In human nature, it is a default reaction to find someone or something to blame for mistakes or wrong doing. The Bible tells us that Adam and Eve tried to push their blame so that they are not responsible for their wrong doings. Unfortunately, their excuses was invalid before God Genesis 3:12-19.
Key point:
1. The devil could use someone’s areas of weakness to entice one to sin. John 13:2,27 Judas Iscariot’s weakness was money. He betrayed Jesus Christ for money.
Be alert, don’t ignore the area/ areas which you’re vulnerable; and resist the devil. Run away from sin 2Timothy 2:22 and use the word of God to fight. James 4:7 resist the devil and He will flee.
2. Having the possession of the Holy Spirit does not shield one away from temptation. Jesus Christ was tempted.
1Peter 5:8 “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”. Use the word of God to fight the devil but be mindful that:
Application of the Bible - word of God is very important not just memorizing the word
Therefore, put on the whole armor of God Ephisians 6:10-18.
Praise God🙏🏾
